The city of Thornton is located in the state of Colorado, US and is a suburb of Denver Metropolitan area. Thornton is located at a distance of 10 miles (16 km) towards the northeast of Denver. With a total area of 70 sq. km (27.2 sq. mi.), and supporting a total population of around 82,000, it stands out as the sixth most populous city of Colorado, and holds the 213th position as far as the total population of US is concerned.
Until 1953, Thornton was dominated by farmlands, when a tract of land (around 7 miles north of Denver) was purchased by Sam Hoffman. He laid out the first fully planned town in Adams County, which was named Thornton in honor of Dan Thornton, a former Colorado Governor. The incorporation of Thornton as a city was brought about by TCA (The Thornton Community Association), which was formed in the year 1954.
